Why visit
Buenos Aires?

Buenos Aires is South America's most cosmopolitan city — a place of European grandeur and Latin passion. The wide Avenida 9 de Julio (the widest avenue in the world), the pink Casa Rosada, the Teatro Colón (one of the world's finest opera houses) and the colourful streets of La Boca define the city's public face.

But Buenos Aires reveals itself slowly — in the tango milongas of San Telmo, the literary cafés of Palermo, the extraordinary Recoleta Cemetery where Evita is buried, and in the asado culture where Sunday lunches stretch past 5pm.

When to Visit & How to Get Around

Best Time to Visit

September–November Spring is Buenos Aires at its finest — jacaranda trees bloom purple across Palermo, temperatures are ideal (18–25°C) and the city's outdoor café culture returns. One of the world's great urban spring seasons.

March–May Autumn is equally lovely — harvest season in Mendoza brings excellent wine, temperatures cool pleasantly (15–22°C) and the city's cultural programme is in full swing after the summer holiday season.

June–August Argentine winter is mild (8–15°C) — the city doesn't really sleep. Indoor culture thrives: tango shows, opera at Colón, the Buenos Aires Tango Festival in August, and the best asado weather of the year.

Getting Around

Subte (Metro) Buenos Aires' 6-line metro (Subte) is cheap and efficient for the main neighbourhoods. A single trip costs ARS 170 (~€0.15). The Sube card (rechargeable) makes travel seamless — buy at kiosks.

Taxi & Cabify Official black-and-yellow taxis are metered and generally safe. Cabify is the preferred app alternative (Uber operates but with complications). Buenos Aires taxi fares are very affordable by European standards.

Walking & cycling Palermo, Recoleta and San Telmo are very walkable. The BA Ecobici free bike-sharing scheme has 400+ stations — free for the first hour. The city's cycle paths (bicisendas) have expanded significantly in recent years.

Buenos Aires's Essential Neighbourhoods

San Telmo

Buenos Aires' oldest neighbourhood — colonial architecture, an outstanding Sunday antiques market, tango dancers in the streets, the Mercado de San Telmo food hall and the city's most atmospheric milongas. The soul of old Buenos Aires.

Palermo

The city's largest and most fashionable neighbourhood — divided into Palermo Soho (boutiques, restaurants), Palermo Hollywood (bars, brunch culture) and the green lung of Palermo parks. The MALBA modern art museum is here.

Recoleta

Elegant European-style grandeur — the unmissable Recoleta Cemetery (where Evita rests), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, luxury hotels and the famous Café La Biela. Sunday's artisan market is excellent.

La Boca

Colourful corrugated iron houses, the legendary Caminito pedestrian street and La Bombonera stadium (Boca Juniors). Visit during the day with a guide — the neighbourhood is vibrant but best explored in a focused group.

Buenos Aires Travel Questions Answered

The main tourist neighbourhoods — Palermo, Recoleta, San Telmo — are generally safe during the day. At night, stick to busy areas and use Cabify rather than hailing street taxis. La Boca is best visited as part of a guided tour rather than independently, especially in the evening.
A milonga is a tango dance event — ranging from tourist-oriented dinner shows to authentic local dances. For the real experience, visit Salon Canning, La Catedral or Confitería Ideal (evenings from 10pm). Most locals don't arrive until midnight.
A quality parrilla (steakhouse) dinner with wine costs around ARS 8,000–15,000 (~€7–13 per person). At this price, you're eating some of the world's finest beef. Don Julio in Palermo is widely considered the city's best.
Argentina's currency situation is complex — the official rate and the blue dollar (mercado informal) rate differ significantly. Use licensed casas de cambio or withdraw from official bank ATMs. Many tourist businesses accept USD cash at favourable rates.
Yes — a Buquebús ferry crosses the Río de la Plata to Montevideo, Uruguay in 2 hours 15 minutes. The fast ferry takes 1 hour. Round trips start from ~€60. It's an excellent add-on if you have an extra day.
