Why visit
Washington DC?

Washington DC is one of the world's great capital cities — planned from scratch on the Potomac River and designed to impress. The National Mall alone concentrates more world-class monuments and free museums than most cities have in total.

The Smithsonian Institution's 19 museums and galleries are entirely free to enter. The Library of Congress, the US Capitol and Arlington National Cemetery are among America's most moving and significant sites. DC rewards unhurried exploration beyond the tourist trail.

September–October is ideal: pleasant temperatures (18–24°C), no cherry blossom crowds and the full schedule of Smithsonian autumn exhibitions.

December brings elegant holiday decorations to Pennsylvania Avenue and the National Mall, with special events at the Smithsonian and National Cathedral.
