Our answer: four days is a good length for a first visit to Dubai, five if you add Abu Dhabi. The famous sights fit into two busy days, but Dubai is as much about the desert, the beaches and Old Dubai as the skyscrapers — and the heat means you will plan around the middle of the day.
2 days — a stopover: the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, Old Dubai and the souks, an evening desert safari.
3 days — add a beach day and the Palm Jumeirah.
4 days — our recommendation. Everything above at a comfortable pace, with time for the Dubai Frame or the Museum of the Future.
5 days — add a day trip to Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
The heat shapes every day
From late spring to early autumn, Dubai is very hot, and even in the cooler months the early afternoon is the time to be indoors. The easiest rhythm is to sightsee in the morning, retreat to a museum, a mall or the beach club in the afternoon, and head back out in the evening, when the city is at its liveliest.
That rhythm is why Dubai needs a little more time than its list of sights suggests: you are effectively working with two half days per day.
Old Dubai is worth the detour
Many visitors never leave the skyscraper districts, and miss the Dubai that existed before them. The Al Fahidi historical district, the spice and gold souks, and the short abra boat ride across Dubai Creek make a perfect half day — and a welcome contrast with the view from the Burj Khalifa.
A realistic 4-day outline
| Day | Focus | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, the souks, an abra across the Creek | Dinner by the Creek |
| Day 2 | Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa observation deck | The Dubai Fountain show |
| Day 3 | Beach morning, then the Palm Jumeirah | Dubai Marina walk |
| Day 4 | Museum of the Future or the Dubai Frame | Desert safari with dinner in a camp |
Book the Burj Khalifa ahead if you want a sunset slot: it is the most popular time and sells out first.
When a stopover is enough
Dubai is a popular stopover between Europe and Asia. With 48 hours, focus on the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall on one day, and Old Dubai followed by a desert safari on the other. Skip the beach and the Palm: they are the easiest things to leave for a return visit.
