How many days do you need in each city?

“How many days do I need?” is the first question of almost every trip. This page answers it for 52 of the cities we cover, in one place, so you can compare destinations, build a multi-city route or check whether a long weekend is enough.

Quick answer: most European capitals need 3 to 5 days for a first visit. Compact cities like Bruges, Venice or Milan can be seen in 1 to 2 days if time is short. Big, spread-out destinations such as Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles or Cape Town deserve 5 days or more.

Doable in 2 days: Bruges, Milan, Venice.

Plan 5 days or more: Bali, Seoul, Tokyo, Cape Town, Cancún, Cusco, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando.

How to read the tables: Recommended stay is the trip length we suggest for a first visit at a comfortable pace. Short on time is the least we’d plan if the city is one stop on a longer route: you’ll see the highlights, but at a brisk pace. Day trips worth adding usually need one extra day each. Best time is the period our city guide recommends for comfortable weather and fewer crowds. Combine with lists cities linked by a direct train or a short flight, for a two-city trip.

How we estimate these numbers

Each recommendation comes from our city guides and is based on three things: how many major sights need a timed ticket or a half day on their own, how far apart they are, and how much time a first-time visitor needs to enjoy them without rushing. We give ranges rather than a single number because pace matters: slow travellers and families will want the upper end, while a return visit needs less.

These figures don’t include travel days. If you arrive in the evening or leave in the morning, count those as half days at most.

Tips for planning your trip length

Plan one big sight per day. Places like the Vatican Museums, the Louvre or the Alhambra take most of a morning or afternoon once you include queues and walking. Two in one day is tiring.

Book timed tickets first, then fix your dates. In popular cities, the main sights sell out days ahead in high season, and that, more than the number of days, decides how much you see.

Combine nearby cities. Rome, Florence and Venice, or Madrid and Seville, are linked by fast trains. Our 5-day Italy itinerary shows how to split the time.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for a European city?

For most cities, yes: three full days cover the main sights of Barcelona, Lisbon, Prague or Budapest. Rome, Paris and London reward a fourth day, because their headline museums each take half a day or more.

Which cities can you see in a weekend?

Bruges, Venice, Milan, Florence and Porto can be done in two days if you plan ahead and book the main sights. Amsterdam works too, though three days is more comfortable.

How many days for a first trip to Japan?

Allow at least a week: around 4 to 5 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto, with a day trip to Nara. See our Tokyo vs Kyoto comparison.

Which cities can you combine in one trip?

Cities linked by a direct train or a short flight combine best: Rome with Florence and Venice, Madrid with Seville and Granada, Vienna with Budapest and Prague, Lisbon with Porto, London with Paris or Edinburgh, and Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka. The Combine with column lists the pairs for each city.

When is the best time to visit European cities?

For most European cities, spring (April to June) and early autumn (September and October) bring comfortable weather and fewer crowds than July and August. Some cities have their own best season, such as Vienna, Edinburgh and the Christmas-market cities in December, or Reykjavík from September to March for the northern lights.
