How many days do you need in Prague?

Travel tips

Our short answer: three days is right for a first visit to Prague. The historic centre is walkable and compact, but Prague Castle alone takes half a day, and the city is at its best early in the morning and late in the evening — which means spreading it out.

2 days — Old Town, Charles Bridge, the castle district. Busy but complete.

3 days — our recommendation. Add the Jewish Quarter, Malá Strana at a slower pace and a viewpoint at sunset.

4 days — add a day trip to Kutná Hora, or Vyšehrad and the neighbourhoods beyond the centre.

5+ days — overnight in Český Krumlov, or continue to Vienna or Budapest by train.

Why timing matters more than days

Prague's centre is small, and that is its challenge: the same few streets between Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and the castle carry most of the visitors. Charles Bridge at 7am and at 2pm are two different places. Building your days around early starts on the bridge and in the castle, and leaving the middle of the day for museums and cafés, matters more than adding an extra day.

Prague Castle is a complex rather than a single building — St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane — and deserves a morning. Our Prague Castle guide explains the ticket circuits.

A realistic 3-day outline

DayFocusEvening
Day 1Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, the Jewish Quarter (Josefov)Charles Bridge at dusk
Day 2Charles Bridge early, Prague Castle, walk down through Malá StranaDinner in Malá Strana
Day 3Petřín Hill or Letná Park, New Town and Wenceslas SquareVyšehrad at sunset, or a concert

One practical note: check the Jewish Museum's opening days before you plan Josefov, as the synagogues follow the Jewish calendar. Prague is also easy to reach and leave by rail — Vienna, Berlin and Budapest are all direct train journeys.

Is a day trip worth it?

With a fourth day, yes. Kutná Hora, about an hour by train, has the Sedlec Ossuary and the Gothic cathedral of St Barbara and makes an easy half-day. Český Krumlov is the more beautiful town but around three hours each way, so it works better as an overnight stop than a day trip.
