How many days do you need in Vienna?

Our answer: three days is the right length for a first visit to Vienna. The historic centre is compact, but its palaces and museums are big, and the city’s coffee-house culture is something you need time to enjoy rather than tick off.

2 days — St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace. Busy, but it covers the essentials.

3 days — our recommendation. Add the Belvedere and Klimt’s The Kiss, the MuseumsQuartier and an evening of music.

4 days — add a day trip to the Wachau Valley or to Bratislava, about an hour away.

5 days — Vienna at a local pace: markets, the Prater, wine taverns on the city’s edge.

Why the palaces take longer than expected

Vienna’s two imperial residences are each a half day on their own. The Hofburg, in the centre, combines the imperial apartments, the Sisi Museum and the treasury. Schönbrunn Palace, a short metro ride out, adds vast gardens and the Gloriette viewpoint on top of the palace tour. Trying to do both on the same day is the most common way to rush Vienna.

Schönbrunn is also the sight most worth booking ahead: timed tickets for the palace tour sell out in high season, and arriving early keeps you ahead of the tour groups.

When two days is enough

Vienna pairs naturally with Prague, Budapest and Bratislava, all reachable by train. If it is one stop on that route, two days work: the centre and the Hofburg on the first, Schönbrunn and the Belvedere on the second. Deciding between the other two? Read Prague vs Budapest.
